The years that comprise a student’s academic experience in secondary school, the middle school through high school years, are a unique period in one’s lifetime. This is a time of change, from childhood to young adulthood, and with this change comes challenges, opportunities, and a broad-range of new experiences. During these years, an important aspect of human development that impacts a person’s future is his/her education. To this end, American High School offers a multitude of academic options and programs for our students. It is important to carefully consider these options and to become familiar with the requirements for successful progression from middle school to high school and postsecondary education.
School administrators, teachers, and counselors are key individuals in helping to guide students in making smart choices to optimize each student’s academic experience. It is my hope that each student take advantage of the information available on our website and of the assistance provided at American High School to plan an academic path that leads to success during the secondary school years and, ultimately, as a productive member of society..

This course is made up of units, which have a series of lessons. Each lesson has multiple pages and contains a link to a textbook reading, as well as some supporting summary. This will allow you to have the most success on your graded assessments for each lesson.
This course is designed to assist students as they make the transition between the concrete subject of arithmetic and more abstract subjects like algebra and geometry. This is accomplished by working with variables, variable expressions, equations, inequalities, and formulas. Subjects covered in earlier math courses such as fractions, ratios, percents, exponents, roots, and probability are studied in further depth for greater mastery.
This course explores what it means to be an informed, participating citizen in a democratic modern society. Students will learn about the elements of democracy in local, national, and global contexts, political reactions to social change, and political decision-making processes in the United States of America. They will explore their own and others’ ideas about civics questions and learn how to think critically about public issues and react responsibly to them.
Current and recent issues may be discussed, and you will be encouraged to research political and social problems in your location.
Students in grade seven continue to deepen their knowledge of life, earth, and physical sciences through more complex investigations and explanations. The concepts they study become increasingly abstract in a developmentally appropriate manner to allow for the slow, incremental development of these cognitively complex ideas.
Seventh graders also continue to develop their investigative skills by generating their own questions, recognizing and explaining the relationships among variables, and critiquing the conclusions that are drawn from scientific investigations.
The HOPE scholarship allows parents to transfer their child to other K-12 public school programs with available capacity within the school district, receive a scholarship to transport the student to that general program in another community, or request a scholarship to attend an eligible student private program.
The McKay Scholarship Program for Students with Disabilities allows special-needs students to attend participating private programs during the 2022-23 school year. The parents have the option choice for an eligible special needs student to transfer to another public program within the scholarship guidelines.
The Florida Tax Credit Scholarship assures that low-income children have more learning options. The scholarships are based on financial need, and families may choose between financial assistance toward private programs and fees or transportation costs to attend public programs in another district.
AHS is one of only a handful of schools to be fully accredited by leading regional and national accreditation authorities.
